The ion chromatograph technique is to analyse cations or anions by using surface functionalized low capacity (several tens meq/g) cation- or anion-exchange resin with low concentraion of electrolyte aqueous solution as an eluent.   The benefit of this technique is that injected ions are analysed only at one injection without annoying pre-treatment of sample.

Green_Bead.gif (973 ???) MCI GEL SCK01 for cation analysis

Separation material for MCI GEL SCK01 is based on a polystyrene with sulfonic acid functionality.  Standard monovalent cations like lithium, sodium, ammonium and potassium are resolved using a diluted nitric acid as an eluent.  Mono-, di- and trimethylamine can also be separated with the same eluent.  Divalent cations and transition metal cations will not elute from the column when the same conditions are applied because selectivity of these elements are much larger.  By adding a complexing reagent such as ethylene diamine into a tartaric acid solution, alkaline earth metals like magnesium, calcium and manganese, zinc, cobalt and cadmium are efficiently resolved.

  • Note
  • Since capacity of packing material for MCI GEL SCK01 is low, heavy metal ions existing in the eluent will contaminate the resin resulting in a loss of capacity and chromatographic performance.  It is recommended that a precolumn, MCI GEL SCK-PC is used to trap such heavy metals and to prevent from contamination of the column.  MCI GEL SCK-PC should be installed between the outlet of pump and the sample injector.

Green_Bead.gif (973 ???) MCI GEL SCA04 for anion analysis

Separation material for MCI GEL SCA04 is a quaternary ammonium functionalized polymer.  The recommended eluent is selected from vanilic acid (VA), methyl diethanolamine (MDEA) aqueous solution and potassium hydrogenphthalate aqueous solution. Newly developed VA/MDEA eluent yields rapid analysis specifically in repetitious injection due to the absence of system peak.

The obstacle system peak occurs when a conventional acidic solution is used as an eluent.

  • Note
  • When using the VA/MDEA eluent, it is recommended to use a pre-column, MCI GEL SCA-PC for prolonged column life.  The SCA-PC should be installed between the outlet of the pump and the sample injector.
